Replacement of deslagger system
Initial situation
As part of the Waste Ordinance, the legislator has stipulated lower residual metal contents in bottom ash. On the one hand, this is in order to be able to utilise slag from waste incineration plants even more extensively in future instead of having to landfill it and, on the other hand, to recover more metals from this slag as raw materials.
As these requirements could not be met with the existing deslagging system, the operator of the plant in question invited tenders for the replacement of the deslagging system in order to enable dry discharge in future.
Challenges
and solutions
The new deslagging system is designed around the robust EnergieLink pusher deslagger and also includes the patented EnergieLink slag chute gate valve, a trough chain conveyor and swivelling dampers from the Steinberg+Kirsch product line. This combination makes the deslagging system suitable for dry discharge, but it can also be operated in wet discharge mode as before.
In dry operation, particular attention must be paid to maintaining the air seal on the slag side without the liquid level present during wet discharge. This is achieved by monitoring the fill level in the slag chute and the swivelling dampers in the ash hoppers.
The air seal can also be ensured during the start-up and shut-down of the system by means of the slag shaft slide.
Results
The conversion was completed on schedule and shows a reliable discharge of the slag. As soon as the deslagging process has been converted to dry operation, the recovery of valuable metals from the slag will be considerably easier.
